Steel
Steel in furniture: High stiffness and strength, excellent for thin load-bearing frames.
Steel appears across 7 product families and 15 options, especially on Adjustable Beds, Gazebos & Pergolas, Outdoor Lounge Seating, Outdoor Lounge Sets and Swivel Chairs.
Chemistry and structure
Steel is stronger and stiffer than aluminium for a given section, which is why it appears in bed mechanisms, chair bases and outdoor frames that need slim but robust structure.
Unlike aluminium, steel is not naturally rust-proof. Its corrosion behaviour depends heavily on galvanising, paint, powder coating or stainless alloy choice.
How it behaves in furniture
Steel shines where a designer wants crisp geometry and dependable load capacity: swivel bases, adjustable-bed components, pergola frames and outdoor lounge structures.
The trade-offs are weight and corrosion management. A good steel frame can last a long time, but a damaged coating in the wrong environment invites rust.
Thermal and comfort behaviour
Steel conducts heat quickly and expands slightly as temperature rises. In furniture that expansion is usually small, but coating cracks, weld quality and humidity matter more over long service life.
For spring systems, the more important performance issue is fatigue and loss of elastic behaviour under repeated cycles. Good steel and good corrosion protection delay that loss; weak gauge and poor protection accelerate it.
Care and design watch-outs
Moisture and wear note: Unprotected steel can rust, so coatings and sealed welds matter in humid and outdoor settings.
Care note: Treat chips in the finish early and keep drainage points clean in outdoor constructions.
Strengths
- high strength and stiffness
- excellent for slim structures
- good fatigue performance in quality builds
Watch-outs
- can rust if the finish fails
- heavier than aluminium
- temperature-conductive hard feel
Recycling and service life
- Recycling in Finland
- Direct clean separated parts to metal recycling; otherwise use municipal bulky-furniture handling.
- Expected wear profile
- Often long-lived, with corrosion and fatigue as the main failure drivers in repeated-load parts.
- Retail warranty note
- Material guidance does not extend the retailer warranty. Unless a product page explicitly states otherwise, keep the practical customer expectation at a 2-year retail warranty window.
Finland-first sorting baseline: clean metal parts belong to metal recycling when they can be separated from the full furniture product.
If the steel is fixed inside a larger bed, sofa or mechanism and separation is not practical for the customer, use municipal bulky-furniture handling and let the operator manage metal recovery.
Steel generally has strong long-term load-bearing potential when the section size, welds and corrosion protection are correctly specified.
Real-life degradation usually comes from coating failure, corrosion at hidden joints, or fatigue in repeatedly flexing components such as springs and mechanisms.
