Chemistry and structure

Polyrattan is a synthetic wicker material, typically extruded polymer strands woven around a metal frame. It mimics natural rattan visually but is engineered for higher moisture and UV tolerance.

The weave itself is not usually the main structural element. The load path sits in the internal frame, while the outer strands provide enclosure, comfort texture and the characteristic basket-like look.

How it behaves in furniture

This makes polyrattan effective for outdoor lounge and dining furniture where customers want an airy woven expression without natural-rattan weather limitations.

Its weak point is long-term surface ageing. UV, cold cycles and mechanical rubbing can eventually make strands brittle, so frame quality and strand grade matter.

Care and design watch-outs

Moisture and wear note: Handles rain and humidity well, provided the underlying frame and cushions are also outdoor-capable.

Care note: Rinse dust out of the weave and check the hidden frame because that often determines the real lifespan.
