Chemistry and structure

Polyester is a synthetic polymer fibre with low moisture absorption and good colour stability. Those traits make it a workhorse in upholstery, decorative textiles and performance outdoor fabrics.

It does not breathe like cotton and it lacks the natural spring of wool, but it handles abrasion, sunlight and everyday maintenance more predictably in many furniture settings.

How it behaves in furniture

In furniture polyester works well for family seating, decorative cushions, rugs and many mixed-fibre fabrics because it offers a practical balance of cost, durability and colour retention.

Its best role is often as part of a blend. Combined with cotton, wool or viscose, it adds resilience and easier cleaning while the natural fibre improves touch and visual depth.

Care and design watch-outs

Moisture and wear note: Hydrophobic fibre that dries faster than cotton and resists water uptake.

Care note: Vacuum regularly and lift oil-based stains before they migrate into backing layers.

Strengths

  • good abrasion performance
  • fast drying
  • stable colour and shape

Watch-outs

  • less breathable than natural fibres
  • can build static
  • cheap variants may feel flat or shiny
