Chemistry and structure

Feathers are protein structures made mostly from keratin. They trap air efficiently, which is why feather-filled cushions feel light, insulating and compressible.

Unlike moulded foam, feather is a loose fill. It shifts under load, recovers through manual plumping and creates a softer, less sculpted silhouette.

How it behaves in furniture

Feather works best as a comfort layer in back cushions and premium seat toppers where a relaxed sink-in feel matters more than a crisp architectural edge.

It is rarely sufficient as the only support medium in a seat base. Most furniture pairs it with foam or a spring platform so the cushion keeps shape and does not bottom out.

Care and design watch-outs

Moisture and wear note: Breathes well but should stay dry; persistent moisture can create odour and hygiene issues.

Care note: Plump cushions often and use lined covers to reduce migration through the shell fabric.

Strengths

  • soft loft
  • premium lounge comfort
  • good breathability

Watch-outs

  • needs regular plumping
  • can migrate inside covers
