Chemistry and structure

Faux leather relies on a polymer coating over a textile base. The coating creates the smooth grain, colour uniformity and spill resistance that make it attractive in dining and occasional seating.

That same coating is also the wear point. Over years of flexing, UV exposure and oils, lower-grade surfaces can harden, peel or crack in ways woven textiles do not.

How it behaves in furniture

It suits chairs and accent seating where easy wipe-down cleaning matters and the user wants a sharper, more tailored surface than fabric provides.

For everyday lounge seating it is usually a compromise: visually neat and lower maintenance at first, but warmer to sit on and less forgiving over long-term ageing than better textile constructions.

Care and design watch-outs

Moisture and wear note: Surface sheds small spills well, yet hydrolysis, heat and body oils can age the coating over time.

Care note: Wipe gently, keep away from strong heat and avoid harsh solvents that dry or crack the coating.
